Quarndon's Swift repopulation project invites your support.

Please help make a difference to Quarndon's nature and wildlife.

Swifts are with us between May and early August every year, delighting all who see and hear them with their aerial acrobatics, but...

UK swift numbers having dropped by 62% since 1995.

Swifts are now on the red list of endangered species,

Since Quarndon Swift Group (QSG) was formed in November 2023 to highlight the plight of Swifts, Quarndon residents have enthusiastically backed the initiative, installing around 80 artificial nest units (as at May 2025).

Swifts fly up to 15,000 miles per year, between Sub-Saharan Africa and their nesting sites in the UK. They nest in small nooks and crannies in buildings - under eaves, roof tiles or gutters. Today, these places are often closed when buildings are closed or renovated, are lost through their demolition, or simply do not exist in modern buildings designed to minimise energy loss.

You can help by having artificial nest units (nest bricks, soffit boxes, or externally hung boxes) fitted to your home.

Swifts are clean, unlike swallows or house martins, and you will be rewarded daily with astounding acrobatic displays over your home. Furthermore, Swifts are nest-loyal, returning to the same nest for their (average) 11 year lives - a handsome long-term payback.
